Madiba: the man behind the legend

From Qunu to Johannesburg: the origins of an extraordinary destiny

Born in 1918 in the village of Mvezo, in the heart of the Eastern Cape, Mandela — known to his clan as Madiba — grew up amidst verdant hills and ancestral values. He studied at Fort Hare and then at the University of the Witwatersrand, before becoming a lawyer in Johannesburg, where he discovered the injustice of the segregation system.

In the streets of Soweto, he committed himself to the oppressed Black community. These early years laid the foundations of his fight for equality and freedom.

From struggle to captivity: 27 years for freedom

Sentenced to life imprisonment in 1964 for sabotage and treason, Mandela spent 18 years on Robben Island, then continued his detention at Pollsmoor and Victor Verster Prison, before his release in 1990. These long years of confinement forged his philosophy: patience, forgiveness and reconciliation. His universal message still resonates today in every place he left his mark.

Johannesburg, the cradle of Nelson Mandela

The Apartheid Museum: understanding the incomprehensible

The Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg is an essential stop on any Mandela tour in South Africa. Its immersive exhibitions plunge visitors into the country’s painful history, but also into resistance and hope. Archive photographs, testimonies, sensory installations: each room invites you to understand so as never to forget.

Soweto and the Mandela House: the living memory of the township

Nearby, Soweto embodies the vitality and memory of the country. On Vilakazi Street, the only street in the world to have been home to two Nobel Peace Prize laureates (Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu), the Mandela House opens its doors to you. Photographs, personal belongings, handwritten letters: the intimacy of a home that became a universal symbol.

This stop fits naturally into a cultural or family itinerary, such as the one featured on our South Africa destination page.

Cape Town, an essential chapter in Mandela’s story

Robben Island: the island of resistance

From the V&A Waterfront, a ferry crosses the Cape Town bay towards Robben Island. The 30-minute journey offers spectacular views of Table Mountain, before reaching this UNESCO World Heritage island. Tours, led by former political prisoners, reveal cell 466/64, the limestone quarry and the courtyard where Mandela meditated each morning.

It is a profoundly moving moment, steeped in silence and emotion — an essential stop on any Mandela tour in South Africa.

Victor Verster Prison: the final walk to freedom

In Paarl, along the Wine Route, a life-size statue immortalises Mandela’s step towards freedom. It was here, at Victor Verster Prison, that he was released in 1990 after 27 years of captivity. A symbolic site, bathed in light, which closes the road of redemption before his election as president four years later.

Visiting Qunu, Nelson Mandela’s birthplace

In the Eastern Cape province, the village of Qunu is both the birthplace and final resting place of Nelson Mandela. Amidst verdant hills and red dirt paths, this peaceful hamlet tells the story of a child destined to change the world. Here you can discover the school where he took his first steps, the fields where he herded cattle and the family home, now restored and open to the public.

The Nelson Mandela Museum, spread across Qunu, Mthatha and Mvezo, offers a moving insight into his life and legacy. Photographs, letters and personal belongings illustrate his journey from a country boy to a universal symbol of peace.

Visiting Qunu is to complete the journey where it all began: in the simplicity of a rural landscape steeped in memory, where the spirit of Madiba seems to still watch over his people.
